The Benefits of Youth Sports

Benefits-Youth-SportsThere are more than 21.47 million children between the ages of six and 17 currently playing youth sports, according to ESPN. So why do so many parents sign their youngsters up to play baseball, softball, football, basketball, etc.? The answer is both simple and complex all at the same time. Youth sports are extremely beneficial to the development of young children.

The Benefits of Youth Sports

Health Benefits

With childhood obesity rates on the rise, youth sports are perhaps more important than ever before. A 2009 National Survey of Children’s Health showed that non-athletes are 60% more likely to be overweight than athletes. But more than that, young people that participate in sports are less likely to engage in risky behaviors such as smoking or drugs.

Excel in School

Young people who participate in sports are less likely to break the rules, skip class, have discipline problems in school, and drop out of school. Conversely, young people who participate in sports are more likely to perform well in school, have higher grades, graduate from high school, and go to college.

Whether you are playing sports or trying to make it in the business world, teamwork is an important aspect of everyday life. And it is one of the first lessons learned playing youth sports. Along the same lines, sports help teach young people the benefits of hard work.

Learning through Failure

When it comes to sports, failure is inevitable. No one can make every shot. No one can hit every ball. No one can win every game. But from each failure comes the opportunity to grow as both an athlete and as a person. And the difference between the great athletes and the mediocre athletes is the willingness to seize those opportunities, even when it is not the easy thing to do.  Are you willing to listen?
