Sportsmanship in Youth Baseball: Winning isn’t everything

Sportsmanship-Youth-BaseballAs the saying goes, “winning isn’t everything.” While professional athletes may beg to differ, youth baseball coaches should take notice. Yes, winning is important. As NFL coach Herm Edwards once said, “You play to win the game!” Still, winning is just one of the many reasons why sports are great, especially on the youth level. Youth baseball, for example, is a learning experience: to learn how to play the game, to learn what it means to be part of a team, and to learn good sportsmanship.

Sportsmanship in Youth Baseball: Winning isn’t everything

In today’s ultra-competitive world, sportsmanship is often cast aside by the major television networks. After all, good sportsmanship does not always make good television. So our children are left to watch the trash talk, the egos, the selfishness, and the win-at-all-costs attitude that allowed steroids to taint the game we love. It is no wonder much of today’s youth think that winning IS everything. As parents and youth baseball coaches, it is our duty to teach our children the true reasons sports, like baseball, are great, like fun and teamwork.

Having fun is the easy part. Baseball is meant to be fun. It is meant to be enjoyed with friends and family. The difficult thing for young athletes to learn is how to not only be a good teammate, but also a good competitor. Sportsmanship!

Yes, you should give it your all, but you should also be a good sport. In every game there is a winner and a loser. Sometimes you will win and that’s great. Sometimes you will lose, and that is okay too! Remember, even Babe Ruth didn’t win every game. He didn’t hit a homerun at every at bat. Heck, he didn’t get a hit at every at bat either. Sometimes, even the Great Bambino struck out. Yup! Even the greats can’t win all the time. The secret is to learn from your mistakes and to grow from your losses, all the while being a good sport and showing compassion for teammates and competitors alike.
